What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?
Clinical Hypnotherapy refers to both the diagnosis of problems, and the application of hypnotherapeutic approaches to treat patients within a clinical and structured framework.
Due to its measurable success, there is growing demand from the general public and the medical profession for qualified individuals in the rapidly developing field modern clinical hypnosis. This has lead to its recognition as a mainstream therapy offering a unique approach to the treatment of both psychological and physical problems.
The principal therapeutic aim of BST Foundation trained clinical hypnotherapists is to offer clients goal-directed hypnotherapy, or brief therapy, for the rapid treatment of a range of problems (frequently within 1 - 3 consultations).
How does clinical hypnotherapy differ from stage hypnosis?
Stage hypnosis exists purely as a form of entertainment and can create ill-founded fears and misconceptions about clinical hypnotherapy. The clinical hypnotherapist will treat each client respectfully, and with complete regard for their dignity at all times. The client remains in control during each session, and as with meditation and self hypnosis, can return to full, conscious awareness at any time.
How does clinical hypnotherapy work?
There is nothing either mysterious or magical about hypnotherapy. Clinical hypnotherapy allows the client access to deeper levels of awareness than in normal day to day functioning. The hypnotherapeutic process alters the client's state of consciousness by encouraging, for the duration of the session, a dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system. The results are that the body and mind relax, conscious mind is inhibited, and so the subconscious mind becomes accessible. Since the subconscious mind is a deeper-seated, more instinctive force than the conscious mind, storing memories and habits, regulating all bodily functions (including breathing, blood pressure, circulation, sleep patterns and tissue repair) this is the part where changes in perception should occur in order for the client's physical state, behaviour and habits to alter.
