Chewsdays is a Castle Square project in partnership with, and serving, the local community. It is managed on behalf of the church by a steering group including representatives of other local churches and the Chaplaincy of the University of Glamorgan.
We are grateful for the support in cash and in kind of the Ecumenical Chaplaincy, Libanus Baptist Church, Pontypridd Town Council and other local partners.

Chewsdays is open every Tuesday except for a short break at Christmas, Easter and in the summer. We love to celebrate special occasions such as St Patrick's Day and our Christmas event with turkey roll and Christmas pudding is always a favourite, as the pictures below testify.

CHEWSDAYS 2009

I am very pleased to report that all is well with our Chewsdays lunches. We are now in our third year and our standards are going from strength to strength. When we first opened we were inspected by the RCT Public Health Department to make sure that our kitchen and work methods were of the required standards to serve the public. We were delighted to be the recipients of a silver award.

How surprised we all were at the end of the last lunch in July this year when an inspector arrived to check us over again! This time, I am very thrilled to report, we received a gold award! We have also received a Healthy Options gold award. To all our helpers – a very big thank you for all the hard work you do to maintain these very high standards.

We are very pleased with the number of customers we serve each week and it is lovely to see new friendships being formed and everyone enjoying the happy and cheerful atmosphere and good food at a very reasonable price. It is also rewarding to have members of other churches both working with us and as customers. In September we were delighted to welcome two new volunteers, Mrs Liz Williams from Treforest and Mrs Linda Green from Tonteg. We thank you both and appreciate your help very much.
We are taking a well earned break over Christmas and look forward to seeing all our friends when we start back on 5th January.
With Best Wishes to you all for a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

Chewsdays officially launched

On Thursday 27th September 2007, the Chewsdays project was officially opened by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glamorgan, Prof. David Halton, after a short ceremony involving also Cllr Jane Ward, Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, and Revd Gethin Rhys, minister of Castle Square Church.

Prof. Halton and Cllr Ward both welcomed the intention of the project to include all members of the local community, student and long-term resident alike. Prof. Halton referred to the serving of Fairtrade refreshments at Chewsdays, and added that the University of Glamorgan hoped shortly to become a Fairtrade university. This would be a small contribution to a fairer and more just world, just as Chewsdays was a small contribution to a fairer and more friendly local community.

The launch was the culmination of many hours of careful preparation by the team, who had laid out a tasty spread of samples from the full Chewsdays menu, and were at work in the kitchen up until the very last minute. All the visitors enjoyed the food, the relaxed atmosphere and the launch of this new opportunity for the community of Trefforest to come together.
