Lower Rhondda Ecumenical Christians
Porth United Reformed Church works closely with other local churches through the Lower Rhondda Ecumenical Christians (LREC) Group. This group arranges a number of services of worship and other activities which enable members and friends of the various churches in the Lower Rhondda to get to know one another and to work together better.
A united open-air Songs of Praise was held on Sunday 12th July 2009 (the day after the Porth Carnival) in Porth Square (by the cenotaph). A large congregation enjoyed singing praise to God under the leadership of Beverley Humphreys, the Lewis Merthyr Band and clergy from local churches. The rain held off, and Beverley lifted the congregation despite a glitch in the sound system - which was repaired in time for us to enjoy the singing of local soloist Louise Clement. It is intended to hold a similar event in 2010, on Sunday July 11th.
Our next united service will be in Christian Aid Week on Thursday 13th May 2010 at 7pm in St John's Church, Cymmer.
A planning meeting will be held on Wednesday 21st April 2010 at 7.45pm in the "upper room" at St Paul's Church, Birchgrove, and everyone interested in planning the worship is invited to attend.
The churches which are members of LREC are:
St John’s Church in Wales, Cymmer
St Luke’s Church in Wales, Llwyncelyn
St Paul’s Church in Wales, Birchgrove Road, Porth
St Mary Magdalene Roman Catholic Church, Ynyshir
Ainon Baptist Church, Ynyshir
LREC is affiliated to Cytûn: Churches Together in Wales, which draws together the principal Christian churches of Wales in co-operation and united witness.
LREC also acts as the local committee for Christian Aid, the churches’ agency for working with the poor of the world. See: www.christianaid.org.uk
