In October 2006, Porth United Reformed Church became a Fairtrade Church. This means:
* we are committed to using Fairtrade tea and coffee at all functions for which we have responsibility
* we are committed to moving forward on using other Fairtrade products whenever we can
* we will promote Fairtrade, initially by means of a monthly stall after each Family Service (3rd Sunday of each month)
Fairtrade products guarantee a fair and stable price to the producers of the raw ingredients, many of whom are amongst the poorest people in the world. A social premium is also paid to the producer group, which is used to improve education, health care, water supplies and so on in the communities where the goods are produced.
Traidcraft Exchange
I am really grateful to everyone who supports the monthly Fairtrade stall, which sold almost £1000 worth of fairly traded goods in Porth and Trefforest last year.
Some customers are kind enough to say "Keep the change", and I have been keeping these donations and sending them to Traidcraft Exchange – I have sent £40 in 2008.
Established in 1986, Traidcraft Exchange works to enable poor producers in Africa and Asia to grow their businesses, find markets, and engage effectively in trade. They are currently managing 14 major projects with a total value of about £5.5 million. These projects are directly benefiting 350,000 people with a further 1.4 million benefiting indirectly.
Traidcraft Exchange identifies the services that small businesses need to enable them to trade effectively, and build the capacity of local service providers to provide these services on an affordable basis. The picture above shows some Bangladeshi ladies embroidering beautiful garments for sale. This is part of a 5-year project which will reduce poverty among poor and marginalised communities in Northern Bangladesh by increasing income and employment opportunities.
So thank you for this additional support. You can find out more about this work by visiting the website
