Funerals and memorial services
The loss of a loved one is a time when you may well want to turn to God for help, support and comfort. The church can help you in this in a number of ways.
-
Our minister is available to conduct the funeral service, either in the church building, at a crematorium or cemetery chapel, in the Funeral Home or in your own home. He will discuss in detail with you what you would like included in the service. The practical arrangements are usually made by a local undertaker. Mair, Graham and Janice Healy of Humphreys Funeral Home, Porth [www.humphreysfuneralhome.co.uk] are members of our church. There are a number of other local firms who will also be willing to assist.
-
You may want to arrange for the interment or scattering of ashes at a later date – perhaps because your loved one died a long way from home and you wish to have a memorial locally. This does not have to involve a religious service, but our minister would be happy to arrange one if you wish.
-
Grief does not finish on the day of the funeral – far from it. You may at a later date want to arrange a memorial service. Again, our minister and the church will be happy to help you do this.
All these services can be conducted in either English or Welsh, or bilingually.
LIGHT FOR OUR LOSS
Each year a few weeks before Christmas, we hold a service of thanksgiving and remembrance of those who have died, called Light for our Loss. The service lasts about 40-45 minutes, with tea and coffee served afterwards.
We invite individually all those families who have had a funeral conducted by our minister during the past twelve months, but the service is open to all. We have all been bereaved at some time or another, and so we may all be touched by this time of quiet worship. The pictures above are from the 2007 service.
During the service, we also read the names which have been added to our Book of Remembrance during the year. This book is kept on the second window-sill from the front on the left hand side of the church, and is always available for inspection or to write next to the name of a loved one. We can arrange access to the church by appointment at any reasonable time for this purpose. We are very grateful to John Attwood for lettering the names so carefully.
Minister Gethin Rhys said, “The people you wish to remember may have died recently, or many years ago. There will be a chance during the service to record their names and to light candles in their memory, as well as to listen to appropriate music. I have invited already the families of those whose funerals I have conducted during the year, but anyone who has been touched by grief and loss – and that means everyone – is welcome.”
