Miskin Cricket Club

                                               125 YEARS OF CRICKET

It is very fitting that in our 125th year Miskin Manor Cricket is at its strongest
both on and off the field of play.   Miskin has been very fortunate to have had so
many people over the years who have done so much to ensure that this great
game of cricket is still being played at Glyn Park.   The efforts of different committed
and dedicated groups of people during the 125 years has culminated in a cricket club
where everybody associated can be proud of the facilities and the quality of cricket provided.

In 1882 the then hayfield was converted into a cricket ground with very primitive facilities.
In 1964 a pavilion was erected which served the club well until 1982 when a new clubhouse
was erected on the present site.   This was later converted to a brick building which we use today.
More land has been purchased over the years which enabled the original small ground to be
extended.   The cricket playing area and clubhouse now satisfies all the criteria required for
Premier Division status in the South Wales League.   We also have a smaller ground with an
artificial wicket suitable for junior matches.   Practice facilities with a 4 bay outdoor centre,
compare favourably with any club in Wales.   It is a real pleasure to play at such a picturesque
ground with an excellent batting wicket.   Facilities have certainly improved and will continue to
do so because of the committment of a hardworking management team.

Friendly matches were played up until 1974 when Miskin entered the Gwent League and the
South Wales Conference.   At present bith 1st and 2nd teams play in the Premier Division of the
South Wales League.   With our 3rd team in Division 1 of the 3rd X1 league the 125th
Annivesary Season sees the club playing at the highest possible level surpassing anything before.
The junior section ids also at its strongest both on qualit and quantity, providing cricket for
boys and girls from 6 to 16 years of age.

We are all looking forward to the 125th season with great  anticipation.   The services of a quality
coach, Richard Almond have been aquired to help the development of all our players.
A Glamorgan player Ryan Watkins has been allocated to play at Miskin and new players
have joined the club.   The committee led by Chairman Gabe Treharne, the 1st team led by
John Francis, the 2nd team led by Jeremy Thorney, the 3rd team led by Les Moir, and the
Sunday team led by Steve Doble and all the junior section will do everything possible to
make this celebration season very special.   Miskin Manor Cricket Club after 125 years
is a thriving club and a credit to everybody wha has been involved since the first ball was bowled
in 1882.

history of club

The club was built in 1909 by the Clark family of Talygarn as an institute for the men of Brynsadler and Pontyclun and it remained an institute until 1959.   During the first world war the club was used as an hospital and a plaque commemorating this is placed in the foyer.

In 1933 the bowling green was opened by Mr. W.D. Clark and the club has maintained a bowls section ever since.   The club is also home to the Pontyclun Football Club who play their games at the Ivor park.

In 1959 committee members of the Institute travelled to London to meet one of the last members of the Clark family to request that she remove two covenants enshrined in the deeds,   one, to allow the sale of alcohol, two, to widen the scope of membership.   This request was granted and the club opened in 1959 as a licensed premises and was renamed The Pontyclun Institute Athletic Club.   In 1974 the concert room was extended and the club welcomed entertainers such as The Bachelors, Dana, Frank Carson, Mike Reid and many more.

In 1968 an extension was built to incorporate a bar and snooker room and the extension was opened by snooker player John Spencer.

Beside the concert room the club has a skittle alley, lounge, dart room/lounge, main bar and a snooker room with two match size tables.   Snooker players Steve Davis, John Spencer.and others have played exhibition matches here with members.

The concert room is available for private parties. i.e. weddings, anniversaries, christenings etc.
