Community Development Explanation
Community Development is about providing programmes for the development of communities and stresses that the people in those communities should be able to effectively participate in determining the conditions and issues which affect their lives.
It is about the active involvement of all people in determining how such issues are tackled and addressed. It is this collective and community response to problems and issues which empowers community members. This increases the opportunities for people to have greater control over such conditions and environments. Community work is about acknowledging the experience and contribution of everyone within a particular community to take collective action for change. This does not solve all the problems faced by a local community but it does build up confidence to tackle such problems at community level.
Community development also has a responsibility to challenge the attitudes and behaviour of individuals and institutions which discriminate against all powerless groups. This process focuses on a wide range of issues ranging from employment, housing, health, finance and work with young people. It is through talking and consulting with the community to assess the needs of the community that change can take place.
In practice, community work enables the community to:
· Recognise the values with which they work.
· Gain strength from collective action.
· Develop confidence, knowledge and skills.
· Develop awareness and understanding of the issues and the structural causes of social problems.
· Take action to confront, challenge and break down prejudice.
