Who we are?

In September 2004, Rhondda Cynon Taf implemented a comprehensive multi-agency substance misuse education programme, entitled ‘Get Sorted’. This education programme was developed in partnership with members of the Prevention, Education and Training Sub Group of the Rhondda Cynon Taf Substance Misuse Action Team. It has been developed in response to local needs and concerns regarding substance misuse, that have been identified through widespread consultation with organisations, schools, the youth service as well as children and young people, across the County Borough. ‘Get Sorted’ puts into effect the educational elements of the Rhondda Cynon Taf Substance Misuse Strategic Plan and contributes to the wider strategic aims and responsibilities of the Rhondda Cynon Taf Substance Misuse Action Team. It's development has been informed by the most up to date and appropriate models of good practice and is also in line with the Welsh Assembly Government Substance Misuse Strategy and Guidance Circular 17/02.

‘Get Sorted’ addresses the complex, differing educational needs of children and young people, through a multifaceted approach, and the employment of outreach methodologies to reach children and young people, up to the age of 25, both inside and outside mainstream education. The programme will provide on site training, guidance and support to both educators and learners, increasing their knowledge and confidence, and enabling open communication about and active support for all aspects of addressing substance misuse, including programme development and incident management. ‘Get Sorted’ staff are available to support professionals, families and communities to provide consistent, relevant substance misuse education, in both formal and informal settings, with a long term aim of a stronger base for substance misuse education.

The project also aims to support external providers, both statutory and voluntary organisations, as well as the officers delivering the All Wales Core Programme. Three specialist ‘Get Sorted’ Education Officers, qualified in both the teaching and substance misuse fields, have been appointed and will be led by the Council’s Co-ordinator for Substance Misuse Education.
