History

Action for Hirwaun was initially formed as a result of peoples concerns regarding the amount of housing development taking place in the village in general and to oppose a planning application to build 128 dwellings on the site of the old Gloucester Wagon Works Site.
The area has been unfenced for over fifty years and has been well used by generations for recreation and leisure purposes. The group intend to challenge the fact that R.C.T. Council originally committed this land for housing over 30 years ago but subsequent reviews of development plans have not taken into account the fact that the land has now matured into a recognised Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. Previously R.C.T Council displayed plans to develop the former Ironworks Site and part of the Gloucester’s Field as an Industrial Heritage Site and Riverside Park, these plans have not materialised and any housing development in this area would probably mean that they never will. The group believe that the whole area should be developed as an amenity for the community and a possible Tourist Attraction.
Hirwaun is fast becoming a “commuter town” with people just travelling to and from work. Despite the rapid increase in housing there are no extra amenities, the roads in and around the village centre are struggling to cope with the extra traffic and there have been very little benefits felt by local traders.
