The final of the Cynon Valley Bowls League Pairs Competition was held at Gelligaled on the late afternoon/early evening of Wednesday 10th September 2008. 

The finalists were from the Mountain Ash Bowling Club - David Lewis and Alan Bennett, and from the Nixons Bowls Club - John  Crowdey and David Prosser.   After 8 ends the Mountain Ash pair were leading 12 shots to 2.  The 9th end saw a complete change around with the Nixons pair taking 6 shots to trail by just 4 and after 10 ends the score was 13 - 8 in favour of Lewis and Bennett. The Nixons pair however pulled back 7 shots and after 17 ends of play the score was level at 15 shots each.   Despite the low level of light available at this time the Cynon Valley League President and Secretary of Gelligaled Bowling Club (Dewi Hughes) suggested that the finalists complete the full 21 ends.    In semi darkness the 18th, 19th and 20th ends resulted in the Mountain Ash pair collecting 6 shots to lead by 21 -15.   John Crowdey and David Prosser now needed 7 shots on the  final end to win and 6 to draw and force a deciding 22nd end.  This final 21st end took 25 minutes to finish in almost complete darkness as the experienced Nixons skip - David Prosser drove the jack outside the boundaries of the rink  3 times.   However on the 4th time the end was played the Mountain Ash pair managed to hold a single shot to win the game.  The final score Mountain Ash (D Lewis and A Bennett) 22    Nixons (J Crowdey and D Prosser) 15.

 

The finals of the Singles, Triples and Rinks will be held at Gelligaled on Sunday 21st September commencing at 2.30 pm.
