History

In 2001 it was decided that it was important that the Rhondda creates quality players in order to continue the tradition of championship bowlers that existed and still exists. In recent years, locally the game had declined so much so that many outdoor clubs namely, Ynys, Cambrian, Nantclydach, Tonypandy & Penygraig disbanded.

To endevour reversing this decline, Rhondda Bowling enthusiasts asked our council to  assist by giving attention to several issues.
One was to ensure Gelligalad Outdoor Bowls Club continues to have their own green and clubhouse. Another was to ensure that necessary facilities were given to the green keepers to ensure all the greens kept in good order and very important was to take necessary steps to stop the not so young vandals creating unnecessary damage and unsociable behaviour so that once again older residents can feel safe and enjoy an hour playing or watching bowls.
The Rhondda Cynon Taf responded by also allowing free use of the greens to young bowlers for two hours on Tuesdays and Fridays provided that they were properly supervised.

Also, it was decided to build on the good work done to date with junior bowlers by creating a more active junior section to the Rhondda Indoor Bowls Club by entering juniors in National competitions. In order to recruit these juniors it was also decided to link up with the Rhondda Borough Outdoors Association and form a junior outdoor league which would also directly improve membership to the outdoor clubs.

It was realised that to achieve the desired results many senior bowlers must assist and work at such developments and to date junior bowls is continuing to improve and more clubs are getting involved.
