Changes to the Free Bus Pass

The newly designed Free Bus Travel Pass, which includes the latest Smartcard technology, is scheduled to be issued by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council in conjunction with the Welsh Assembly Government, during July / August 2008.

To ensure that you receive your new bus pass, it will be necessary for you to inform your Council if your circumstances have changed since your bus pass was first issued. For example, this might involve:-

· A change of address.
or
· If the Free Bus Travel Pass is no longer required due to a long-term illness.

Also, to avoid unnecessary distress your Council needs to be informed if a close family member has passed away and who was in possession of a Free Bus Travel Pass. This is to avoid a bus pass for a loved one being produced and posted.

Please ensure you and/or a close family member’s details have been updated by contacting the Rhondda Cynon Taf Bus Pass Helpline on 01443 494816.

Free Bus Passes

Free concessionary bus passes are provided and funded by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, with financial assistance from the National Assembly for Wales. Last year the Council paid the participating bus operators almost £4,500,000 in return for the travel concession. The free travel scheme represents excellent value for money. In a year the average pass holder will save almost £130 on bus travel.

Where can I use the free bus pass?

You can use your pass at any time and on any day of the week.

You can travel free of charge on almost all local bus services throughout Wales. You can also travel to and from towns just over the border in England, providing there is no change of bus involved.

However, you cannot travel free on certain types of services, for example:

  • Rail Link bus services, which connect with trains and charge rail based fares
  • National Express / Long distance coach services
  • Buses operating tourist services
