Who operates the rail service?
Rail services in Rhondda Cynon Taf are operated by Arriva Trains Wales, following their award in December 2003 of a new, 15-year integrated rail franchise to provide interurban, rural and commuter passenger rail services throughout Wales and the border counties.
Where do I buy a rail ticket?
Staffed stations can issue tickets for any journey within the UK Rail Network. Within Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Where there are no facilities for purchase at a station, tickets may be purchased on the train.
Can I buy a return rail ticket?
Single and return fares are available. Cheap day return tickets are available throughout the week but on Mondays to Fridays, restrictions apply on trains arriving at Cardiff Queen Street or Cardiff Central before 0930 and departing from these stations between 1630 and 1800. Please note that certain additional restrictions may apply on days when rugby international matches or other special events are taking place at the Millennium Stadium.
Are child fares available on the trains?
Half fares are available for children up to their 16th birthday.
Up to two children under 5 years of age may accompany each fare paying passenger free of charge, provided that they do not occupy seats required for other fare paying passengers. Any additional children must be charged half fare.
What about student discounts on rail?
A Student Railcard is available to all students who are in full time education. It costs £20 and is valid for a year. The holder is entitled to a 1/3 discount.
Are concessionary fares available for the over 60’s on the trains?
For travellers aged 60 or over, a Valley Lines Seniors Railcard allows a 50% discount off Valley Lines Cheap Day Return fares. The cost is £5 and it is valid for one year.
What other discount rail fares are available?
Arriva Trains Wales also offer weekly, 4 weekly, monthly and annual season tickets ensuring the opportunity for all regular travellers to save money.
The best way to explore the Valleys is with a Day Explorer Ticket (Adults £6.50, Children £3.25). This ticket offers the flexibility of one day's unlimited travel on the whole Valley Lines network, as well as Stagecoach in South Wales bus routes and discounts at certain key attractions – Abergavenny Castle, Abbey Mill, Cyfartha Castle, Drenewydd Museum, Elliot Colliery Winding House, Greenmeadow Community Farm, Rhondda Heritage Park, Torfaen Museum Trust and Usk Rural Life Museum.

Who do I call to find out about bus and rail times?
Traveline Cymru provides times and route information about all bus, coach, rail, ferry and air services in Wales. Calls can be made in English or Welsh to 0870 608 2 608 between 7.00am and 10.00pm every day. Friendly experienced staff can pinpoint any location and bus stop in Wales and provide information about public transport journeys and connections. Details about most bus fares in Wales can also be provided. Rail timetable information is also available 24 hours a day from National Rail Enquiries (NRES) on 08457 484950.
