Siew's New Year

Siew's New Year

Siew is a lady who was born in South Wales and has always lived in the UK. Here's her experience of the Chinese New Year:

"Our New Year is not January the 1st, Our official Chinese New Year varies on days, around February. This year, 7th February. I suppose it is now widely known that our new year consists of zodiac animals, this year being the Rat.
Chinese New Year is about unity and selflessness. Everyone wishes the best for everyone. In Hong Kong, a lot of effort and special events are held for this time of year. However..... we don't generally make a fuss on how to spend Chinese new year in the UK. In local china towns, i.e. London, Manchester there are usually Dragon Dances, and loud fireworks and crackers, but we normally have a nice meal at home or out together.  My mum would make Chinese sweet puddings in the shape of fishes, and red paper decorations illustrating good health, prosperity etc would be hung up on the walls. This is also the time of year when me and my siblings, look forward to receiving red envelopes filled with money.
As we get older, we tend to celebrate for everyone being together. As long as we're all healthy and happy, and united in having a nice enjoyable meal, Chinese new year couldn't be any better!"
